Node-H Femtocell Software Supports 16 Calls on Percello PRC 6500

Node-H is showing 16 simultaneous calls on a femtocell using its protocol software. This extends Node-H's technical leadership in Femtocell technology. Node-H was the first independent software vendor to show 8 simultaneous calls and has shown the fastest data rates with 10Mbps HSDPA.

Munich, Germany (PRWEB) October 21, 2009 – Node-H has shown 16 simultaneous calls on a femtocell using its protocol software on the Percello PRC6500 femtocell SoC (System on a Chip). The calls can be a mix of video and audio calls, while some of the devices can be browsing the web or sending and receiving emails using high speed packet access. This is the first time that an independent software vendor has shown this level of femtocell performance.

A femtocell is a tiny cellular access point, suitable for the home or office. It connects to the operator's network through a broadband connection. The operator can offer improved coverage and capacity indoors. Consumers will benefit from excellent mobile coverage indoors, additional services and bandwidth as though they had the whole network to themselves.

There is some debate about what level of performance is required from femtocells. Many people believe that supporting 8 simultaneous calls is sufficient for home use. The Enterprise market, such as offices, shops or public buildings are likely to require 16 simultaneous calls. For all femtocell types the data speeds should be as fast as possible.

Outdoor femtocells can support a cell radius of up to 2 kilometers. Femtocells supporting 16 simultaneous calls can extend mobile phone services to rural locations at a fraction of the cost of existing picocell solutions. For operators in rural areas, especially in China, India, Africa and South America, femtocells are a natural solution for network rollout with point-to-point microwave links being used for the backhaul.

Node-H has shown technical leadership by being the first company to show 16 call performance as well as having shown the fastest high speed data performance yet seen from a femtocell. Demonstrations of this capability can be viewed at the Node-H website http://www.node-h.com/showcase.html.

"Our long experience in UMTS on the handset side gives our femtocell work a rock solid foundation" said Mike Cronin, CEO of Node-H. "There is some nervousness on the part of carriers about the next stage which involves broader deployment. We're confident that our deep knowledge both of handsets and femtocells makes us a strong partner during rollout."

Femtocell manufacturers are under pressure from operators to speed up the roll-out of low-cost femtocells. Silicon and pre-integrated software allows them to accelerate their time-to-market. Specialized software companies like Node-H allow new entrants to enter the femtocell space more easily.

Node-H will be demonstrating its technology next month at Femtocells Americas in San Diego.
